HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) has become one of the most popular forms of cardio, with many finding that they prefer the short, intense bursts over steady-state cardio.
HIIT classes can involve anything from running, cycling, kettlebells, dumbbells, medicine balls and TRX – usually we throw in a good mix to keep it interesting! Movements are short but intense – you may push yourself as hard as you can for 30 or 45 seconds, then ease off for just enough time to catch your breath and then it’s all go, go, go all over again.
HIIT classes have gained popularity due to the number of benefits they provide – burn fat, increase strength, and improve cardiovascular health. Those who perform regular HIIT cardio are known to burn fat quicker, particularly the subcutaneous fat surrounding the abdominal area.
A HIIT class is often the most practical way to work out for those who are time sensitive, as you have the ability to achieve in half an hour, what may take an hour to achieve performing solid-state cardio. HIIT also burns more calories after your workout, compared to steady-state cardio. Burn calories while sitting on the couch – sounds too good to be true!
Our HIIT classes also build muscle strength, as HIIT stimulated the fast-twitch muscle fibres, unlike steady-state cardio which uses the slow-twitch muscle fibres. Have you ever noticed that marathon runners are built rather lean and 100m sprinters are quite muscly? This is why!
